Child Development Centre
The Child Development Centre is located in Mzuzu and provides support to children with disabilities. The centre takes an integrated approach and creates a personalised plan for each child attending the centre. The services provided include:
An Early Intervention programme: a home based care service delivered by physiotherapists and trained volunteers. Visits are conducted to family homes and mothers are empowered to stimulate their children appropriately to their developmental stage.
A Postural Management service is also offered for infants and children to assist in their mobility.
Parental counselling: the Positive parenting Group is a space where parents a disability can share their concerns on their children’s disabilities and their expected developmental issues. A councillor is facilitating every meeting.
The Elvira Institute is a school for special education in Mzuzu, which offers children with intellectual and physical disabilities a chance to learn as many skills as they can. The school accommodates an average of 68 children with a special education need.
